Board Governance

Even though your nonprofit is an expression of your vision and your "baby," by definition, a US nonprofit has no legal owner. Instead, state law requires governance by a board of directors or trustees. This course will teach you the roles and responsibilities of boards, how they operate, and how you can recruit committed volunteer board members.

The Founder

Hello! I’m LaCharla Figgs, founder of T.L. Figgs Nonprofit Consulting and Nonprofit Startup Academy LLC. I'm a 25+ year veteran of nonprofit management, grant making, and consulting.

Many years ago, I wanted to start a nonprofit, and I had no idea how to start. And I knew nothing about the nonprofit sector.

Fast-forward a few years, and I was working with community-based nonprofits, teaching them about federal regs, helping them improve their financial systems, training boards, addressing staffing issues and even managing a grantmaking program.

But one of my greatest joys was helping a compassionate woman create a residential program for moms graduating from drug rehab. She had been serving young women one at a time in her own home and had a bigger vision. Helping her create an aftercare program was one of the most rewarding things I've done in my career.

So in 2017 I created Nonprofit Startup Academy to help compassionate people like her bring their visions of serving people to life! Instead of wading through government regulations, paperwork, board development, grantwriting, and the rest alone, they would have a mentor to help them move more easily into their Purpose.

It's still some of my most rewarding work. I love working with visionaries who refuse to wait for "someone somewhere" to make a difference. And I can't imagine a better job!
